Anamorphic 3-D Drawing Write Up
- An anamorphic drawing is a distorted image that has unequal magnifications creating a 3D optical illusion.
- In order to produce an anamorphic image we used a picture frame with glass, a shoebox, tape, a Vis-a-vis marker, a meter stick, beads, a pencil and a laser pointer.
- Our anamorphic drawing is a result of a projection. The image we drew on the glass was visually projected onto the poster. If you look at our image from a different angle from which we drew it from, it won’t have the same dimensions as the original angle. The first step in creating our anamorphic drawing was to trace our image onto the picture glass. We then stood up and secured the glass and frame into a shoe box. As a team, Claire and I matched the different main points of the image that were projected visually onto the poster and placed a bead where the point landed. The image we created is stretched and magnified in different ways than the original image, but if you view it from the projection position, it will look 3D and the same as the original image.
- Claire and I came across several obstacles in creating our anamorphic drawing. We learned through trial and error. The first hurdle we came across was deciding on an image that wouldn’t be too challenging to draw. We first decided to draw a cup of coffee, then a pair of sunglasses, but what we learned was that since this images had rounded edges it made plotting and drawing the images extremely difficult. We finally decided on an image that was not only simple and had straight lines, but it was also a really cool optical illusion. We also learned that its important to make sure the box, poster, and visual person are all the same distance apart each day. When the box was closer to the poster then it was the day before, the image didn’t match the plotted points. We overcame this obstacle by measuring each distance and making sure all the points matched.
