Project Reflection:
This project was a group effort to create either a newspaper or a newscast in spanish from a spanish speaking country including pop culture articles, current events and advertisements affecting our country. In the first semester, we individually did research on our topic on our focus country which was Venezuela. My article was about an American olympic hopeful using her dual citizenship to make the Venezuelan Olympic team. In the second semester, my three other teammates and I collaborated to create a news video. We took a class period to record us reading our articles, and later edited the clips together to create a full video.
I connected to this project by picking a topic that I am really interested in. I am a ski racer and I love to watch the winter Olympics, this article gave me perspective on making an olympic team. This project was a great way to apply myself to writing in spanish. I had a moment where everything clicked when I had to figure out my grammar and spelling errors.
This project was challenging for me. Spanish doesn't come easily to me so having the correct grammar and spelling, and keeping the content at a level thats interesting to people who are fluent in spanish was difficult. Ironically, figuring out my grammar and spelling errors was the most challenging for me. I persevered however, and completed my editing process correctly.
I learned in this project that as a language learner, I need to be more out going even when it's difficult. I was really nervous to be recorded speaking spanish and I could have made my video segment better by being bolder and more enthusiastic. I could improve as a learner and collaborator by not procrastinating and practicing reading my article. As a team we had really good individual work, but collaborating and communicating was challenging for us. I think that this mostly came from having members including myself being absent and a lack of interest in doing a video. Next project I will work on my procrastination skills, being a better team player, and being more confident in speaking in spanish.
After spending a month focusing on current events in Spanish speaking countries, I have gained practice in my speaking and writing skills. I can also take away from this project the differences and similarities in the culture of Venezuela and the U.S, what the happenings are in a spanish speaking country.
