Ecuador Survival Guide Link
During this project, myself and my group members worked together to create a survival guide for traveling to Ecuador. Each member was assigned several pages in the survival guide. I was assigned to shopping, accommodation, and a free choice of scuba diving in the Galapagos Islands. For each page I researched all the helpful info one needed in order to know what to do in each scenario including cultural references, dialogue, helpful tips, and the best places to go. In the next part of the project, we took the of the dialogue from one of the scenarios, and made it longer and more interesting. We used the dialogue from my scuba diving scenario. Since there were three of us in the group, we added another speaking part. Each person was in charge of translating their lines from english to spanish. Next we added blocking, acting, props and costumes and turned the extended dialogue into a skit. Our costumes included snorkel fins, goggles, and swim cover ups to show we were scuba diving. We had a blue sheet representing the ocean, several cut out fish and seaweed, and chairs and a sign showing the boat. In the skit, I was the scuba instructor telling the two travelers about the wildlife they will see in the water, how deep we will go, what to if they see a shark, and more. Andie was a traveler afraid of sharks and Izzy was a traveler afraid of drowning. Izzy drowned but luckily I saved her life.
While researching Ecuador, I learned about the culture. It was interesting to research the Otavalo Market, the best known market in South America because of its handmade jewelry, finest woven clothing in the region, locally grown food, and many different handmade goods. It is in the capitol city Otavalo, Ecuador and serves as many of the local's source of income and a popular shopping area. It was also exciting learning about the wildlife in the Galapagos Islands. Underwater Iguanas that live only in the Galapagos, whale sharks, bull sharks, and giant manta-rays thrive in the beautiful ,warm island water.
This project broke through my fear of speaking in spanish. While writing dialogue, facts, and memorizing my lines, I gained confidence in my spanish speaking, writing and reading in skills. Applying the correct grammar and new vocabulary throughout the whole project gave me a lot of practice and really helped me during my spanish final. Although speaking in spanish in front of the community was completely nerve racking, the experience made me gain a whole new level in my speaking skills. I learned so much through this project both about spanish and how hard you have to work to make something quality and successful, even if that means doing more of the work than other members.
