I am most proud of my zipper on my mask and what it represents. The zipper is showing that in our government and society, women have very little voice. For instance, only 18% of the seats in congress are filled by women. I think the zipper was a really strong icon on the mask and represented my idea well. In this project, I learned so much about the social norms of the seven identities, gender, race, sexuality, age, ability/disability, religion, and wealth, and I realized how big of a role these identities play in the U.S in everyday life. In my mask essay, I am most proud of my thesis/introduction, "Women are chained down to social norms, the expected behavior from you depending on your social identities, gender, class, age, race, sexuality, religion, and ability/disability. You have been socialized by media, parents, peers, and school, to understand the social norms and which ones apply to you. In this unit, we have studied sociology and have created an understanding of evolution of human society, our social identities, and how to control them. If America is really the “Land of the Free”, women need to be just as free as men. Society and the media is socializing women including myself, dangerously, creating strict and controlling social norms that expect us to do the impossible, to be perfect." because I think I was very clear and informative about what my paper was about. I think it gave the reader enough background of all the subjects I would be talking about, and the thesis itself is really powerful. It was a really big eye opener of how I have been socialized and how I have been discriminated against or how I discriminate others. In this project I did a lot of self reflection of how I can change how we can start to be socialized to erase these controlling social norms. I think I should have refined my mask more. The skin tone was very uneven, bumpy, and I don't think I used as many symbols as I should have. Refinement is is really important in project based learning especially at Animas because you need your project to exemplary work. Exhibitions are chances to show off our school, and the quality of your project reflects the school, so having beautiful work shows how awesome our school is.
