LINK Internship at Pura Vida Healthcare July 2016
At Animas High School, all juniors are required to participate in a three week long intership called LINK. This internship entails working alongside profesionals to gain real-world knowledge and experience as well as supply guidance related to career paths and educational steps.
My internship placement is at the local Durango buisniess, Pura Vida Healthcare. Pura Vida Healthcare is a holistic healthcare cooperative offering naturopathic medicine along side naturalistic therapies including acupuncutre, Ayurvedic medicine, cranio sacral therapy and more. Their mission is aimed towards holistic health practitioners offering care to patients to achieve wellness.
During these three weeks, my mentor will be Dr. Nicola St. Mary, a naturopathic doctor who has her B.A in International Health from Brown University and has extensive experience in therapy for mental health disorders, international health and connections, and naturopathic health.
As of now, my goals and interests are aimed towards acceptance into college and taking a path leading into the medical field. This internship at Pura Vida Healthcare will help me move towards these goals in many ways. The first being interships are very attractive to college acceptance administratiors. This internship will also verify my interest in the medical field, specifically in the holistic area. In addition to those very specific benefits, I will be learning and applying real-world skills I can apply throughout my life.
During the LINK internship, students are required to complete a project aimed towards helping the local or global community. I am thinking my project could be creating an informative resource platform for patients to utilize to find information related to naturopathic medicine. This platform will include helpful information about naturopathic medicine as well as a collection of the best resources for health issues or healthy lifestyles such as hotlines for emergencies or a collection of the best websites for Celiacs Disease. I hope this project will be a good way to make this experience not only meaningful to myself but also to the business and the community.
Some of the obstacles I have overcome concerning setting up my internship, were very few, but includes communication struggle because of the fact that I was living in Spain. I was unable to attend the first scheduled meeting due to illness after my return to the U.S, which prove to be a bit of a detour to staying on track. However, I didn't let these hiccups cause too much trouble to the success of lining up the internship and I am really grateful for the patience on their side.
I am feeling very excited about this opportunity, even though I may be loosing some of my summer free-time, the amount of things I will be learning and experience lead to a very fulfilling way to spend my summer. Medical care, specifically holistic or naturopathic care, are at the top of my interests right now and I am very excited to learn as much as I can during my time at Pura Vida Healthcare. I think it will either help verify my interest in the field and help me move towards that goal, or help determine that maybe this career isn't the best option for me, either way it will help me shift to the right path.
